very interesting piece of film was shown on the joint French - German TV channel recently.
Americans will probably be familiar with it, but I had never seen it before. It was the film of the Senate Commission that finally disposed of Senator McCarthy.
and today ? a US Senator is repeating yet more discredited lies about British MP George Galloway.
the often used tag of "anti-American" seems strange to me when people are supporting an administration that is openly treacherous to their own nation.
to attack Syria or Iran is illogical, indeed ridiculous. However it is what the Israelis want. And to pretend that they, or the Bush administration, cares how many American lives are lost as a result would be delusional.

Rich... this news appears to be 20 steps backwards!
By NASSER KARIMI, Associated Press Writer
"TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's hard-line president called for Israel to be "wiped off the map" and said a new wave of Palestinian attacks will destroy the Jewish state, state-run media reported Wednesday.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also denounced attempts to recognize Israel or normalize relations with it...."
So maybe THIS is why Washington is JUSTIFIABLY nervous about Iran and Syria? I thought Iran had given up its aggressiveness?!
What does this guy want, lifetime war? This changes my viewpoint for the moment. I never expected so strong a statement as this! Never.

So go attack Iran, Ed.
2000 dead Americans and you and Bush and hooting and howling for more.

I am not howling for war, Rich. Never have, you misquote me.
I want the American troops home, let the Iraqis fight their own wars. But the President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the leading cleric in Iran Ayatollah Hashemi-Rafsanjani are both calling for the destruction of a country.
This is a declaration of war! They are guaranteeing the destruction of Israel, using nuclear weapons?! What utter MAD-NESS! And oh, yes, the Palestinians would be destroyed in the process... sorry about that???
What HORROR these words are!
Bush and Condoleeza Rice were RIGHT ALL ALONG! That is what these speeches are telling me!
It won't be invasion, it will be annhialation on all sides! What frightening times we live in! What right-minded person wants this tragedy?

Ed, Ed -- calm down. It's called "rhetoric." Virtually all polticians pander to their constituents, in hopes of justifying their "leadership" and (not incidentally) remaining securely in power. Political and religious leaders may claim to be speaking from deep personal conviction, but I (the renowned cynic) say "talk is cheap."
Ariel Sharon would seem to be a leader who had a "change of heart" and is attempting to actually LEAD his people, despite the bitter reaction of many of them. This sort of thing is nearly unheard of. . .
Most politicians know that you can't go wrong by playing to the fears and prejudices of the masses. The junta presently in power here is playing that card to the hilt -- and playing with fire, if you ask me.

why shouldn't the Iranians be angry ?
they and Syria are facing a barrage of lies and threats of mass slaughter.
I am glad to see that Russia is offering cover to both.

You are both right, I believe. Easy for me to say that the Iranian comments are "declarations of war" and slaughter, yet from the Iranian government point of view... what threats do they perceive from the United States. Certainly, massively strong rhetoric has been directed at them.
In an earlier Haut thread, we mentioned the Shia triangle, despised by the United States... Iran, Iraq, Syria. (not true, necessarily, but perceived)
And the Lebanese Prime Minister was assasinated, allegedly with Syrian origins, or so we are led to believe.
Impossible that the Iranian people want this. Impossible that the American people want this! What is the description... Kafkaesque madness?!
We have just ratcheted up 10 notches. By the way, I now believe, based on everything I have read, that the Iranians DO NOT WANT AMERICA TO LEAVE Iraq, not yet anyways.
Iran wants to bleed us for another 10,000 troops, they have us right where they want us, sitting ducks in a turkey shoot! They want the daily headline... "4 more GIs killed", "3 more GIs killed", "25 dead GIs last week". Certainly, our pride will keep us there, it is lose, lose, lose from here on out.
Iraq is a wonderful trap schemed by Iran. America should back off to the countryside or pull out! What did Chesty Puller say... "Retreat? Hell, we just turned around and attacked in a different direction."

definitions for non-Brits:
1. BNP: British National Party (the web-link - extreme Far right party)
2. WPC: Woman Police Constable
3. Bradford: West Yorkshire city with very large Asian community and a history of riots
4. What happened: an armed robbery (police statement http://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/section-item.asp?sid=12&iid=2027)
5. Result: extreme use of this story in the UK to call for arming the police (many are already armed) and to call for the reintroduction of the death penalty.
The intention is to use this incident to make people feel 1) frightened and 2) to fear people with dark skins in order to introduce greater police powers for a police force with an increasingly vicious, racist and dishonest image. (People should not forget that the London police held down and murdered a Brazilian a few months ago - and that they used illegal "dum-dum" bullets to do it, firing between five and eight shots into the head of the man already pinned down, who had not done anything, nor even been considered suspicious. The dum-dum is a soft-nosed bullet that causes terrible wounds).
6. Is Britain dying ? Yes.
