Well I dont know. There is definitely alot of cool stuff going on over there but this one seems a little far out. Have you seen the videos?? The floors are moving so fast, it takes a little reality out of it all.
So construction definitely HAS NOT started then, correct?
When its built, then I'll believe it...
Anyways, what exactly is fueling all the growth in Dubai to begin with?
I tried looking it up, and came up with no good reasons. |

there is just a whole lot of capital there that comes from some oil but also alot from transhipment and more and more tourism... also the royals own all of the land and give out free leases so the cost of land is zero...which helps attract alot of investment money...
of course if things don't move fast enough for the royals they have the option to take the land back including whatever building might be on it at the time... |

Take the land back?! They can do that? Wow I cant imagine being the owner of the building that my land was just confiscated. What would they do in a situation like that???
Well for as much as the place is growing it just seems insane.
Like for example, artificial islands being sold. Idk, it seems that the growth doesnt have sufficient support, despite the oil and tourism.
And the "Dynamic Architecture" thats supposedly going to be built seems the most un-waranted. Why would they want something like this in the first place. |

You have to keep in mind the disparity between the rich and poor these days. The rich have so much money they have trouble finding ways to spend it all. This causes a lot of creative thinking. _________________ Chris Stewart

there is also a lot of speculation going on in dubai... towers typically are fully leases when they get built but often times no one ever lives in them...condos are bought up with the expectation that they will be able to be sold in a few years for a significant profit...
one of the craziest things is stuff like hospitals...they are building tons of them...they definitely don't have the population to support the amount of healthcare being built but they expect to become a healthcare hub for the entire region...
harvard is building a 1 million sq ft hospital there now... from award of design contract to completion was only supposed to be 3 years...which is absolutely insane for such a huge complex building... |

| I think that I read an article on the region that said that based on all the speculation thats occuring most people and the royals there as well are hoping/counting on that all the building and "attractions" will be the very thing that brings Dubai up to population standards. |

i guess you can say im a techno-geek, make that an Archi-techno-geek for that matter, ive done alot of reading about this and think its crazy, then again, crazy stuff has been going on in the world of technology as well "CPU's, Mobility, cpu chips, CGI ..etc", crazy enough for computers to actually crunch those numbers to calculate the structure of the new china central television headquarters according to this article " http://news.yahoo.com/s/mcclatchy/20080720/wl_mcclatchy/2994196 "
so i think we've come to an age where computers and architecture work so well with each other that we're not realizing the possibilities anymore. and there for, i would assume that our current generation of Architects are the starting point of "dream-a-tecture" or "future-tecture" . call it what you like, but with buildings such as Calatrava's Twisted Torso and Chicago spire paving the way, im really anxious for what has yet to come.
am i for the "spinning" building?, yes i am. am i keeping my hopes up? not really.
oh and one more thing, finally! we can put a building in actual motion rather than just make it "feel" as if it was lol. |
