Everyday I am feeling architects are getting better and better as businessman. Jonathan Segal is one of the best known architect/Builder here. Personally I know a few who are raking in a lot too by doing various kind of development.

See link:

Without money you can do some form/degree of architecture but you and your family and staff will be in poor house. So be wise. You can do some pro bono work once in a while.

If anyone is interested, i have secured a discount rate if I can get a group together. Pricing is reduced from the current $795 to $595 or as low as $495 if a can get 15.

Quote:
Since opening his office in 1990, he's designed, financed, and constructed nearly two dozen buildings, most of them handsome assemblages of stucco, wood, and rusted mild steel (which he has dubbed “the poor man's Cor-Ten”). Almost all of the buildings contain rental apartments.

I've always talked about this...I'm glad to see it proven. Architect-Builder is the best scenario but there tends to be two problems: first, one must be able to raise serious capital to invest in large projects (not a simple feat), and second, like our local famous developer, Jorge Perez who studied and inititally work in urban and planning, to be a developer with architectural services is less about architecture than it is about business. In other words, if business management is 90% of development and construction management, then architecture may be 5% of any given project. But at least it's the fun part...designing. Then you hire people to prepare working drawings...

...it's not unheard of, nor impossible. I think in fact it's the best case for an architect. But it's not typical nor can it be.

I recently attended his mini lecture in KC, which was quite inspiring and encouraged me to give his "method" a whirl.

I will be going to the D.C. lecture and was able to wrangle a deal.

No wonder he's rich if he can persude people to part with hundreds of dollars for a lecture ticket. It's called valuing one's time and ideas. Which takes an unusual self-confidence. It also illuminates the notion that many more people prefer to follow rather than to lead.

I agree in principle...a lot of "experts" make more money staging lectures and conferences on "how to"...when the gist of any of them is the same premise: work hard, learn as much as possible, find the financing and good luck!...and if it doesn't work for those who attended, so what...they got our money! Smile

I got everything from the article...there is no secret, it's old real estate business. Use other people's money, zero in on your market (in this case, renatal units) and it's all about location and timing. He couldn't sell all those units for $300K today to investors, I'm sure...it's probably why he's touring now...the market sucks...but it will rebound someday.
