Hello everyone,
Does anyone know what I can do to reduce sound in a college cafeteria, that has a metal corrugated roof. The space has 25' ceilings and they have tried to apply 3 coats of paint but have found it to be ineffective. I have seen various forms of foam and insultation products but nothing with a finished surface that would be architecturally pleasing to the eye. Does anyone have any ideas that are acoustically and architecturally pleasing? Please advise
Thanks

Brian,
You need to add sound absorbing materials into the space. Those materials could include carpet, banners, wall panels and so on. With a cafeteria, that could prove to be difficult. Who wants to clean up the carpet in a college cafeteria.
I am assuming this is a new space and has a neo-modern design. You might think about suspending cloth panels (with some insulation in the to "catch" sound). The panels could be arranged in a fashion that allows for some visual interest. Maybe work with someone in the art department. Come up with a variety of shapes and colors and thickness of panels and go from there.
You need to review the issue with the structural engineer to ensure you can hang the additional weight - or better stated - what weight can you hang. |

Would that create an issue with the fire sprinkler system? _________________ Chris Stewart

Apparently this is an existing building problem.
When you said that three coats of paint are not working, I suspect that you are referring to "sound proofing paint" as used in in automobile bottoms
There are 2 ways to sound proof metal roofs -after the fact-
1- Providing that you do not have a building code required roof-ceiling insulation in, you could spray Fire Rated Polyurethane Foam Insulation directly on the metal roof underneath surface, at 25' high ceiling, esthetics are not a major problem, black painted roof-ceilings are commun in most warehouse retail stores.
2. If you have an insulated roof, the insulation was installed when the metal roof was installed. The R-30 insulation installed consists of two layers of polyethylene bubble film sandwiched between two layers aluminum foil. This insulation is not designed as sound profing system.
In this case, the only sure sound profing alternative is to install a Polyurethane Foam roof on top of the metal roof system. Contact a rooffer specializing in foam roofs.
