smaller firms in NY

I'm currently working in a big firm, and would want to relocate to NY and find a smaller (around 10 people) firm, but I found that 10-person firm in NY mostly do residential projects( or offices, interior oriented). is that generally true for NY?
maybe I should look in other cities as well... thanks.
