| I am building a second level on my 11m2 home in Mexico. The house is built from brick and cement and is solid, the ceiling is 10cm thick. At the last minute I was offered a half-price deal from my father-in-law who new a guy who had a light concrete buisness. They delivered the concrete pre-fabricated slabs and then started putting it all together. I am very concerned because they want to put the two main walls (11m along the outside) which were supposed to be built directly on top of the existing ones just inside of them. this is because I have wooden beams running up from the terrace and it will extra work to build around them. In my mind it will be alot of weight on the ceiling and none on the wall. the engineer (he is not really!) told me its ok as they will reinforce the ceiling next to the wall. Im am concerned that over time the ceiling will give in. Should I tell them to build wall on wall or is it acceptable to build just inside? |

Sounds like serious issues, Maybe you should talk to an engineer.

| I am not very clear about the framing layout, though it sounded not too good. I understand in mexico reinforced concrete is not common. If you can post the framing layout, material type and thickness, I can review and give some comments. |

It does sound like something you should take up with your engineer or if you know someone else that could come round even on the pretense that you want them to finish off the work, at least you will have a clearer idea of your situation.

| surely wall on wall makes more sense. have you considered the span of the new slab? YThe thickness of the existing slab doesnt sound too happening. You must get professional advice from a structutal engineer. |

I think your father-in-law wants to build a mouse trap (may be he wants to catch a rat)
For the safety of your family, is not advisable to use concrete slabs on top of un-specified wood structures, the two material have diferent modulos of elasticuty, have a real engineer design the addision based on the excisting walls. |
