How popular is tilt up concrete construction? What are some of the problems or benefits of it? It seems like a great method for certain projects (schools, hospitals, office buildings, industrial buildings, etc.), but I was wondering what perceptions and opinions there were about it amongst the architecture community.

Thanks!

Tilt-up Construction and Precast Concrete Building Education

Meet the Tilt-up Concrete Association

The leading trade organization in the industry for tilt-up construction is the Tilt-up Concrete Association. Founded in 1986 by a group of contractors, professionals and manufacturers, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association works to expand and improve the use of Tilt-Up as the preferred construction method by providing education and resources that enhance quality and performance.

"The TCA is to tilt-up construction what the AGC is to the commercial construction industry," said Ed McGuire, Vice President of Construction for Arlington, Texas-based Bob Moore Construction and TCA boardmember. "The organization works to educate industry members and create standards to make tilt-up even more safe and successful than it is now." For more information about this organization, please visit the Tilt-up Concrete Association website at tilt-up.org.

Tiltup.com is an education resource on tilt-up concrete construction, general contractors and commercial construction.

Tilt-up concrete construction is a proven method for building office buildings, retail centers, warehouses, distribution centers, call centers, manufacturing facilities and other commercial / industrial structures with speed, safety and construction cost benefits.

Tilt up.com will feature articles on how general contractors use this innovative method of construction to deliver quality building projects quickly and cost-efficiently. Tilt up.com will also offer construction-related articles, photographs and helpful links to construction companies and service / product providers.

What is tilt up construction?

In a tilt-up construction project, the building's walls are poured directly at the jobsite in large slabs of concrete called "tilt-up panels" or "tiltwall panels". These panels are then raised into position around the building's perimeter forming the exterior walls. Tilt-up construction allows general contractors to build a wide range of commercial buildings more quickly and with lower construction costs than what is typical for traditional masonry construction projects.

Texas, California and Florida are currently the most popular states for tilt-up concrete construction. Factors contributing to this are expanding economic development, favoring construction temperatures and affordable construction workforces. In northern states with more severe winter climates, Precast concrete buildings are more popular.

Precast concrete buildings are buildings constructed using precast or prefabricated concrete wall panels. Precast construction is similar to tilt-up construction, except that the concrete wall panels are formed at a manufacturing facility and transported to the job site by trailer, rather than fabricated directly at the site. This prefabricated panel process, provides a more controlled environment for consistent quality, insulated panels and weather protected scheduling. An offset is required close proximity from jobsite to manufacturing site and higher final in-place costs.

Tilt wall concrete buildings are the same process as tilt-up concrete buildings. In some regions the term tiltwall is used interchangeably with the term tilt-up. Tilt wall is a compound word using the terms "tilt-up" and concrete "wall" panels. In Texas, tiltwall is the most commonly used term for the more proper term tilt-up.

If you have a tilt-up concrete construction project that you would like to feature, please contact Tiltup.com. If you are involved in the commercial construction industry and would like to be linked to our site, please visit our tilt-up construction links page for more information.

Thanks for that very informative post, good links and insight.

I am now wondering like the original poster, what is the common opinion of architects towards both tilt-up and prefab construction? and do the advantages also translate to residencial properties?

I am familiar with low cost prefab housing, and economy of scale tilt-up commercial buildings, but I am yet to find a high-end luxury Villa/Apartment/residencial property which uses the prefab concept.

Many Thanks.
Dream
