Generally I would say architecture is about the design of buildings and enclosed spaces. Sometimes it is concerned with simple place-making. At other times it applies itself to large scale masterplanning of groups of buildings and spaces.

Facade design is only a small part of architecture.

I agree there. Facade design is part of the broader architecture. I also think that facade has less to do with the functionalism of architecture and more with the aesthetic or the structure prior to entering it. The first impression.

Pretty hard to get a career in facade design.

I would say the functionality is affected by the façade, as all parts, given a successfull architectural work, will contribute to the end result of the working piece. Structure hides in the façade, the windows and doors and vents allow the building to breathe and give welcome, through façades, the façades enclose the inner sanctuaries and offer shelter from lateral forces, whether climactic or other such as view. It would be a mistake to think of the façade as simply an enclosure for the 'architecture', as this would be like stating that your skin is only a covering for your body. Façades can be suggestive as well, by claiming space outside, detached from seemingly non related interior walls, or by extending our sight line perspective outward. My advice is to spend more time finding how the relation of envelope and interior, structure etc, can be cohersed into a cohesive and complete system rather than separating them and making the mistake of turning your back on a very important piece of the architectural system.

WIKIPEDIA

Building facades make a major contribution to the overall aesthetic and technical performance of a building. Facade engineers work in consultancy for architects, building owners, cladding manufacturers and construction managers. Projects can include new buildings and recladding of existing buildings.

Facade engineers work in conjunction with other members of the design team including fire, acoustic and lighting engineers. Their goal is to balance the overall objectives of appearance, quality, performance, cost, durability and schedule.

Facade engineering requires a blend of skills ranging from structural engineering through to building physics, architecture, manufacturing, materials science, dynamics, programming, procurement, project management and construction techniques.
