Hi

A friend of mine asked a question on a non-architecture list which I wondered anyone here might be able to help with.

------
A lot of buildings in The City [of London] use a stone effect I don't understand. The building will be faced with white stone (Portland?) but the stones in prominent positions have a crinkly front. It's as if jigsaw pieces soaked in acid had been thrown onto the stone and allowed to eat their way into the rock to a centimetre depth, while the rock between the jigsaw pieces stands proud. What's this called, and how's it done?

-----
I'd be most interested to hear your suggestions.

Cliff
