If you are designing the hostel to be build in the USA, use the minimum alowances permited by the Uniform Building Code (UBC) Chapter 3, Section 310.1 and Table 3-A, or in the International Residential Building code, they have the same specs.

If you are bulding in other country, talk to the government officials issuing the building permits.

THE BUILDING CODE GIVES YOU THE SPACES PER OCCUPANT, READ AND LEARN, YOU CAN NOT PIGYBACK KNOWLEDGE.

Try looking at Youth Hostel Assocation websites. They usually list the accommodation and facilities. For example:

http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/london/hostels/london_central/facilities.aspx

Otherwise, maybe you should go and stay a night in a Youth Hostel!
